South Korea eSIM: 5 plans compared for your trip

For most trips to South Korea, 5–10 GB is enough for a week of Naver Map, KakaoMap, messaging, translation and train bookings. Unlimited data is worth paying for mainly when you stream, work from a laptop or share your connection every day.

Quick verdict

  • Lowest verified seven-day unlimited price: Maya at $19.99, but it auto-renews while Travel Mode remains on.
  • Best fixed-data shortlist: Airalo offers 10 GB/30 days at $19 and Saily 10 GB/30 days at $18.99. Airalo names SK; Saily does not name its partner.
  • Most useful network disclosure: Holafly names SK Telecom and LG U+. Airalo shows SK plus a separate LG U+ product.
  • Best documented hotspot allowance: Airalo’s unlimited policy permits personal tethering; Saily says no hotspot limit. Holafly limits sharing to 1 GB/day.

These are representative offers, not the whole catalogue. Airalo and Yesim also showed larger fixed packages, while Holafly and Maya focus on unlimited data. Recheck the final price and plan rule before paying.

Choose for Seoul, Busan or Jeju

For Seoul and Busan, a 5 GB plan usually covers maps, metro directions, KakaoTalk and ordinary browsing for a week. The closely priced 10 GB offers from Airalo, Saily and Yesim give more room for photo uploads and day trips.

For Jeju, mountain routes or travel between smaller cities, the local network is more important than a small price difference. Holafly names SK Telecom and LG U+; Airalo names SK and offers a separate LG U+ option. Saily and Yesim promise automatic or local partner selection without naming the Korean carrier.

Unlimited plans need their fine print. Airalo’s default policy gives 3 GB at full speed per 24 hours, then 1 Mbps. Holafly may apply a temporary operator restriction without publishing a threshold. Yesim also warns of throttling without a number. Maya claims no caps or throttling; this remains the provider’s claim rather than an independent speed test.

Hotspot, calls and Korean phone numbers

All five comparison plans are primarily mobile-data products. They do not include a South Korean number in the quoted price. KakaoTalk, WhatsApp, FaceTime and other internet calls work over data, but a service that requires Korean SMS verification may still need a local SIM or separate phone-number product.

For laptop work, Airalo and Saily publish the clearest generous tethering terms. Maya includes hotspot but its availability ultimately depends on the local network. Yesim states hotspot support. Holafly is straightforward but capped at 1 GB of shared data per day.

Install before departure, activate on arrival

Confirm that your exact phone model supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Install over reliable Wi-Fi before flying, save the QR code or manual setup details offline, and keep the travel line disabled until the provider’s activation step.

After landing, select the eSIM for mobile data and enable data roaming on that line. Airalo, Holafly and Yesim start validity when the plan connects in South Korea. Saily activates automatically on arrival when the eSIM and roaming are enabled. Maya activates from its app; turn Travel Mode off after the trip if you do not want renewal.

FAQ

Which plan is best for one week in South Korea?

For normal sightseeing, compare 5–10 GB fixed plans. For daily video, laptop work or heavy photo backup, Maya had the lowest verified seven-day unlimited price; check the renewal setting before leaving it active.

Do I need a Korean phone number?

Not for maps, messaging or most travel apps. You may need one for services that insist on local SMS verification. None of the five data prices in our table includes a Korean number.

Will the eSIM work on Jeju Island?

The providers sell nationwide South Korea coverage, but actual signal depends on the partner network and terrain. If Jeju or rural travel matters, prefer a product that names SK Telecom, LG U+ or KT and verify the network at checkout.
